The Jewish celebration of Hannukah, also known as the Festival of Lights, begins at sundown tonight. Although it isn't the biggest event on the Jewish calendar, it nonetheless is connected with an important victory over oppression more than two centuries ago. Our translation of an article on Hannukah from About's Judaism site provides more information.
If you've seen other Spanish-language materials about Hannukah, you may have noticed that it's sometimes spelled as Jánuka instead of the Janucá used here. Neither is incorrect, just as in English both the spellings Hannukah and Chanukah (among others) are used. All are an attempt to get fairly close to the pronunciation of the original word, a process that is known as transliteration. Although pronunciation varies with region, Spanish speakers usually pronounce the J with a gutteral sound, making the Spanish pronunciation closer to the original sound than the English pronunciation usually is. Learn more about pronouncing the J.
